After running an MTD Yard Machine tractor for a summer, the air filter will clog. A dirty air filter will cut down on performance as the tractor's air flow becomes restricted. The engine will lose horsepower, causing the tractor to feel sluggish and unresponsive. Cleaning the filter, however, will revitalize the engine's performance.
Things You'll Need
Trash can
Sink
Dry towel
Open the tractor hood and search for the air filter. On an MTD Yard Machine, it will be on top of the engine near the front.
Pop the top off the filter's cover. Pull the filter out of the cover.
Shake the air filter over a trash can. This will remove big clumps of debris and make the filter easier to clean in the sink. Gently bang the filter against the inside of the rim of the trash can.
Turn the sink on to a slow dribble. Run the filter under the water. Clean as much dirt out of the filter as possible.
Dry the filter as much as possible with the towel. A wet filter should not be put into the tractor. Let the filter sit out for 15 minutes to dry.
Place the filter back into the cover in the tractor after it is dry. Close the hood.
Tips & Warnings
Turn off the tractor before removing the air filter.
If the filter still has too much dirt in it, replace it.
