Dracaena sanderiana, more commonly known as lucky bamboo, is a popular houseplant in the United States. It is not actually part of the bamboo family at all, but rather part of a diverse family of lilies and other houseplants. Chinese culture esteems lucky bamboo as a plant that will bring its user blessings such as happiness, wealth and longevity. Although the stalk of the lucky bamboo plant does not grow very quickly, leaves growing from the top will flourish with proper care.
Things You'll Need
Vase
Pebbles or decorative stones
Bottled water
Place the lucky bamboo stalks into a vase or similar decorative container. Clear containers work well because they allow you to see the stalks and stones inside.
Fill up to 3/4 of the container with decorative stones, making sure that the stalks of lucky bamboo stay in place as you arrange the stones around them. Colored stones, marbles and even natural stones all work well for this purpose. You can even choose stones to match the decor of the room in which you will keep the lucky bamboo.
Pour fluoride-free bottled water into the container until it is about 3/4 of the way full. Although you could use tap water, most areas add fluoride to their tap water, and lucky bamboo is very sensitive to fluoride.
Place the lucky bamboo in a location that is bright but does not receive direct sunlight.
Hold the lucky bamboo stems in place, pour all of the water out of the container and replace it with fresh fluoride-free bottled water at least once per month. Replacing the water weekly is an even better way to care for your lucky bamboo.
Fertilize the lucky bamboo if it begins to turn yellow and has had its water changed weekly. Choose a plant fertilizer without many salts, as salts can cause the leaves of the plant to die.
