Apricot trees add beauty to your landscape, provide shade and produce tasty fruit during the early spring. While apricots are a rewarding tree to grow, a large number of problems can be associated with improper watering technique. Watering your tree too frequently can cause it to become a victim of root rot. Insufficient watering can result in small fruits or interfere with bud set. It can be difficult to determine when your apricot tree needs watering and just how much to provide.

Determine how much water is in the soil. You should water your tree when the soil 6 inches below the surface is barely moist. Use your trowel or shovel and dig a small hole near the tree. Place your ruler in the hole to determine the level where the soil is barely moist. If it is at or below 6 inches from the ground's surface, it's time to water your tree. Normally this happens every 10 to 14 days, but depends on rainfall. If you prefer not to dig, you may instead use a moisture meter.
Water the tree deeply, so that the soil becomes wet at a depth of 2 to 3 feet. For sandy or gravely soil, this is usually about 30 gallons of water. If your soil is clay based, you may need to add more.
Prevent moisture loss by spreading a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch over the surface of the soil and around the base of your apricot tree.
Tips & Warnings
Place a set sprinkler near the trunk of your tree and allow it to run for several hours when it's time to water your apricot tree.
Although clay-based soil requires more water to become saturated, it also holds water longer than sandy soil. Remember this when deciding when to water your tree.
Watering every 10 to 14 days is an estimation. Factors such as rainfall, drought and other climate conditions can effect this timetable. Check the moisture level in your soil for best results.
