Things You'll Need
Rocks
Rolling measuring wheel
Determine the area where you want the landscape rock to go. Place rocks along the boundary for easy reference.
Measure the length and width in feet of your chosen area with a rolling measuring wheel. If you have an area that is not a perfect rectangle, break it down into smaller rectangles and then add the numbers.
Multiply the length and the width. This gives you the square feet of area to be landscaped.
Convert this to cubic feet by multiplying by 0.25. This provides for a three-inch-deep coverage.
Convert this to cubic yards by dividing by 27. The resulting number is the amount of cubic yards of landscape rock you will need for your area.
Tips & Warnings
Try to fit your shapes into a rectangle as often as possible.
For greater accuracy, use the formulas for area for the particular shape you have planned. If you have a mixture of shapes, divide the area into its various shapes and calculate accordingly.
Some gravel companies sell by weight. In this instance, ask how much weight would make up the volume you need.
If the stated volume of rock is given in different measuring units, either convert the stated volume to the same measurement units you have or convert yours to the stated units.
