Bentgrass, a highly invasive perennial grass often causing concern for lawnowners, can spread into a lawn and choke out the present grass by infiltrating its root system. If you want to remove bentgrass from your lawn, you can do so with an herbicide. Although it also will kill the grass that your lawn is composed of, it will completely remove the bentgrass and allow you to reseed the area without fear of its return.
Things You'll Need
Garden hose
Garden sprayer
Glyphosate herbicide
Unscrew the top of your garden sprayer and clean it out thoroughly with a garden hose. This will prevent you from inadvertently applying any leftover solutions to your lawn that could be harmful to your shrubs or pets.
Turn the garden sprayer upside down and allow it to air dry completely before continuing.
Fill the garden sprayer with an herbicide containing glyphosate.
Pump the garden sprayer to build pressure, then spray the herbicide directly onto the patches of bentgrass. Avoid spraying other areas of the lawn as the herbicide is non-selective and will kill them as well.
Allow the herbicide to kill the bentgrass for approximately one full week, then reapply the herbicide if necessary.
Tips & Warnings
Apply the herbicide in the early spring and fall seasons.
