Chufa is a perennial plant often used to feed animals, most commonly pigs and wild turkey. This plant is nutritious and high in both fat and protein, so it helps animals grow fatter and stronger. Once established, chufa plants are extremely hardy and can potentially last for years, but they should have 180 frost-free days to get to this point. As long as you plant the seeds correctly and follow a regular watering regimen, you should have a successful chufa crop.

Choose a plot of land to plant the chufa seeds. Chufa does best in partially sunny areas with loamy, well-drained soil, but they can survive in clay soils as well. It's best to choose an area where you can plant the seeds in square plots rather than a few thin rows.
Till the top 2 to 3 inches of soil to break up the soil and kill weeds. Depending on the size of the planting site, you can use either a motorized tiller or a hoe.
Water the soil so it is moist to a depth of 2 inches. Do not let the soil become soggy.
Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the soil. Use 10 pounds of seeds for every ? acre of space. If planting seeds over a large area, you can use a seed spreader for this step.
Rake the surface of the planting site to incorporate the seeds into the soil. The seeds should be buried about ? inch deep.
Keep the soil moist to a depth of 2 inches throughout the growth cycle. Chufa can tolerate short droughts, so do not worry if the soil dries out for a day or two.
