When you prune any bush or tree, you should wear gear to protect your eyes, along with gardening gloves.

Two-handed lopper
Hand shears
Remove any dead or loose branches during the winter. Switch tools when the size of the branch changes. Remember that the more you remove, the more stress you put on the plant.
Remove any stubs on the main truck during the spring with a two-handed lopper. You job is to remove any remaining remnants of branches that you pruned during the winter.
Work your way around the tree, cutting the heavy growth areas and removing needles and candles in those spots. At this point, start thinking about the shape of the tree that you want. Use a pair of hand shears to cut small branches and twigs.
Pull the needles and candles that seem to be loose on their branch as you continue to move around the tree. Remove longer and older needles and candles. This will make room for young, sturdy needles. Also remove all the pine cones since they eat up important nutrients. This purpose of this step and Step 3 is to dictate growth throughout the tree.
