Powdery mildew is a common disease that affects many plants including zucchini. The powdery mildew usually presents itself on the leaves first as small, round white fuzzy spots. The powdery mildew will spread to other areas of the plant--as well as other plants in the area--and, if not treated, will kill the zucchini. Many people opt to use a fungicide to remove the powdery mildew. However, fungicide contains harsh chemicals. Instead, choose an all-natural homemade remedy. Before beginning the treatment, remove all leaves that have fallen from the plant.
Things You'll Need
Skim milk
Water
Garden sprayer
Baking soda
Removing Powdery Mildew Naturally
Mix 1 cup of skim milk with 9 cups of water. Pour the mixture into a garden sprayer. The amino acids and salts in the skim milk combat powdery mildew naturally.
Spray both the top and bottom of the leaves, as well as other infected areas, with the mixture.
Repeat the steps every two days until the powdery mildew is no longer present.
Alternatively, mix 1 gallon of water with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and add to a garden sprayer. Apply the mixture to all infected areas of the zucchini plant every three days.
Preventing Powdery Mildew
Provide susceptible plants with cover, to prevent an excess of moisture from rain.
Water the plants in the early morning to give them enough time to dry. Try not to get the leaves wet when watering.
Keep the area under the plants free from debris. Remove leaves, branches and other items to keep mildew and fungus at bay.
