MTD Snow Throwers are hearty machines, able to remove large quantities of snow at a rapid pace. Much of the strain your snow thrower encounters is, by design, absorbed through the auger drive belts as they twist and turn. It is important to maintain the snow thrower belts, but when they need to be replaced either because of overstretching or breakage, it can be performed at home. This procedure takes only a few minutes.
Things You'll Need
Socket set
Phillips head screwdriver
Replacement belts
Turn off your snow thrower. Place it on a level surface. Disconnect the spark plug from the spark plug wire.
Use your Phillips head screwdriver to remove the belt covering positioned on the front of the snow thrower engine. Unscrew both its screws and lift it away from the thrower.
Lean your snow thrower completely forward, until it is securely balanced on the ground via the engine housing. Remove all Phillips screws securing the frame cover, which is located beneath the snow thrower main body. This exposes the auger drive belts.
Take the idler spring off the auger housing by hand. This requires no tools and can be simply unhooked. The spring can be found locked around the hex bolt. Unhooking the idler spring causes the auger belt to loosen. Pull both front and rear auger belts free from the engine pulley manually.
Replace both front and rear auger drive belts by following the removal instructions in reverse order. Replace the snow thrower frame cover. Reattach the belt covering. Reconnect the spark plug to the spark plug wire. Start the snow thrower and test for proper operation.
