Decorative fake wells are popular yard ornamentation. Many of these artificial wells are made of painted wood and embellished with smaller wooden shapes. Some styles of faux wells are treated to look primitive or antiqued. Fake wells are prone to damage from extreme weather conditions. Protect your fake well by sewing a rectangular cover from waterproof vinyl. With moderate sewing skills, you can make a fake well cover in about an hour.
Things You'll Need
Tape measure
Vinyl
Scissors
Painter's tape (optional)
Cotton-wrapped polyester thread
Sewing machine
Sewing machine needle, 12/8 to 18/110
Measure the length of the fake well. Add 1 inch to the measurement. Your well cover will consist of two pieces: a square top and a rectangle. The bottom of the cover will be open, allowing the cover to slip over the top of the well.
Measure the widest point of the well's width. Multiply this measurement by 4. Add 1 inch to this measurement. The extra inch provides a little give when putting the cover onto the well. This is the width of the rectangular piece that will form the continuous sides of the well cover. There will be only one side seam.
Cut one vinyl rectangle according to the modified length measurement in Step 1 and the measurement determined in Step 2.
Figure the measurement of the square top piece by using the measurement of the actual well width (at the widest point) as the measurement for each side of a square. Cut the square from vinyl. For example, for a well measuring 36 inches at the widest point, your top square will have four sides, each measuring 36 inches.
Align the right top corner edge of the rectangle on top of the right corner edge of the square. Use a piece of painter's tape to tape the corners together if necessary. Painter's tape, often blue, contains an adhesive that is easy to peel away from the vinyl. Don't pin the vinyl. According to Cyber Seams, once you poke a hole in the vinyl with a needle or pin, it's there to stay.
Install a needle designed for leather or vinyl use in your sewing machine. According to Denver Fabrics, a leather or vinyl needle has a cutting point designed for thicker materials. Thread the machine with cotton-wrapped polyester thread. According to The Artful Crafter, cotton-wrapped polyester thread is intended for heavy-duty sewing where strength is necessary.
Sew the vinyl rectangle edge on top of the vinyl square edge using a tight, wide zigzag stitch along the edge. There is no seam allowance because you are sewing along the edge. Use a contrasting thread color for added flair.
Turn the square to the next side, continuously sewing the rectangle edge to the sides of the square. When the end of the rectangle meets your starting point, lift the pressure foot of the machine and maneuver the two length edges of the rectangle beneath.
Sew, vertically, the side seam. At the end of the seam, reverse your machine and sew for 1 inch to lock the stitches. Cut the thread. Slip the vinyl fake well cover over the top of the well, pulling it to the ground.
