Unlike their two-cycle counterparts, four-cycle weed eaters do not use a blended gas/oil mixture in the fuel tank. Four-cycle weed eaters use a separate oil sump, much like any other engine, to oil the parts inside the engine. Oiling a Troy-Bilt string weed eater is a matter of changing the oil, which Troy-Bilt recommends doing every 25 hours of use. There are no other oiling recommendations for either the two-cycle or four-cycle weed eater.
Things You'll Need
Container
Rag
SAE 30 SF motor oil
Unplug the spark plug wire from the spark plug and locate the oil fill cap near the rear of the engine.
Twist the oil cap counterclockwise to remove it from the engine. The oil dipstick will be attached to the bottom of the cap. Wipe the dipstick clean with a rag and set the oil cap aside.
Drain the oil out of the weed eater and into a container. Hold the trimmer upside down over the container until all the oil drains from the engine. Place the weed eater on a flat, level surface to refill with oil.
Pour 3.4 fluid ounces of SAE 30 SF motor oil into the oil fill hole. Place the oil cap with dipstick into the cranckcase and pull it out again. Check the oil level on the dipstick. Add oil until the dipsticks reads "Full."
Place the oil cap back onto the oil fill hole and twist clockwise to secure it.
Tips & Warnings
Dispose of used oil properly. Contact an auto parts store for disposal locations.
Instead of SAE 30 SF motor oil, SG or SH is also suitable.
