A wheelbarrow is a commonly used tool in gardening or landscaping work. The wheelbarrow has a metal or plastic bucket or basket used to carry heavy or bulky items. This can be dirt, rocks, mulch or any other material needing to be moved from one location to another. A wheelbarrow has two handles and usually has one tire in the front. If the tire goes flat because of a hole in the inner tube, the wheelbarrow cannot be used until the inner tube is replaced and the tire is inflated. Using a wheelbarrow with a deflated tire can damage the tire and rim.
Things You'll Need
Pliers
WD-40
Flat-edge screwdriver
Turn the wheelbarrow over to gain access to the tire. Remove the tire from the wheelbarrow by taking out the cotter pin or bolt that holds the axle in place. The cotter pin looks similar to a bobby pin. Remove the cotter pin by grasping the looped end and pulling, using pliers if necessary. Pull the axle out. If the axle is rusted or sticks, use WD-40 to loosen it.
Pry the tire away from the rim by placing a flat-edge screwdriver inside the rim along the edge of the tire and gently lifting the tire away from the rim. Repeat this motion all the way around both sides of the tire until it is loose from the wheel.
Push the tire valve stem through the opening in the rim to completely remove it. Once the tire is free from the rim, remove the worn inner tube from the tire and replace it with a new one.
Place the tire back around the rim and push the valve stem through the opening. While holding the tire in place, start to fill it with air. When the tire is full, place it back onto the axle of the wheelbarrow and reinsert the bolt or cotter pin.
Tips & Warnings
Inner tubes can be purchased at your local hardware store or bike shop.
