Viburnum shrubs grow quickly, so regular pruning is necessary to maintain their shapes. Mature height depends on the variety, with the shrubs ranging from 2 to 40 feet tall. They produce clusters of creamy white or pink flowers in early summer and bright red berries in the fall. Flowering shrubs must be pruned just before or just after they bloom so the flowers aren't lost. Viburnum is suitable as an informal and formal shrub, so pruning ranges from maintenance trims to complete shaping of the bush.
Things You'll Need
Pruning shears
Cut out dead or winter-damaged wood in early spring. Trim the branches back to within ? inch of where they join the nearest healthy wood.
Thin the shrub right after flowering to increase air circulation inside the plant. Remove up to one-third of the interior branches, using pruning shears. Cut out any branches that are crossed and rubbing together, as well as branches that are growing too closely together.
Trim the top of the shrub to control height, cutting it back by up to one-third. Make the pruning cuts within ? inch of a leaf bud so the cut end of the branch is camouflaged by the leaf.
Shape the shrub as desired. Generally, the top should be narrower than the base so sunlight can reach the foliage near the bottom of the plant. Cut back any overgrown side branches, and trim the viburnum into a mounded shape.
