In ancient times, yellow roses were used to convey happiness, light, friendship and new beginnings. In 18th century Europe, the message of a yellow rose changed to something a little darker and by the 20th century the most accepted meaning moved back to something joyful. Mixing yellow roses with other colors also carries significance as does the gift of a single yellow rose.
Early Meanings
Throughout ancient Middle East and the Orient, the original meaning associated with yellow roses was warmth, life, knowledge and joy, chiefly because the yellow rose was the same color as the sun. In addition, yellow rosebuds symbolized innocence and youth, as well as a caring relationship. However, pre-20th century European society associated jealousy and dying love with a yellow rose.
20th Century and Beyond
Beginning with the 20th century, yellow roses were considered symbols of friendship, appreciation, delight, platonic love and just "remember me" statements. They also convey the desire to start over, and suggest "welcome home" or "welcome back." The ancient connotation of jealousy or dying love has morphed into a meaning of jealousy in terms of caring and a desire to reconnect.
Bouquet or Single Rose
Because yellow roses do not symbolize romantic love, they are often mixed with other flowers to add a message of cheer and happiness. To convey lightheartedness and a jovial nature, combine yellow and red roses. To communicate a desire for harmony, arrange yellow roses with white roses. Yellow and orange roses suggest the possibility of passion. For even more impact, send a single yellow rose to say, "You make me happy" or "I'd like to be your friend."
Floriography
One of the first unofficial dictionaries of floriography, or the language of flowers, associated yellow roses with friendship and joy. That was back in 1819, but people have used flowers to communicate since early Chinese dynasties. Victorian women found the gift of a yellow rose reinforced friendship and offered good cheer.
Evolution of the Yellow Rose
As new hybrids of yellow roses appeared, new meanings did as well. A yellow rose with red tips can suggest a desire to turn a friendship into a romance. It also can mean you already are in love with the recipient.
