Bamboo has become a popular house and garden plant, and can grow in limited space or over larger areas. This plant is considered to be a good luck charm in some Asian cultures, and often appears as a part of the internal landscape in this function. Although bamboo is unique and exotic, it has some simple growing needs.
The Facts--Bamboo
According to the Gardener's Network, bamboo is either clumping or running. Running bamboo grows in shoots and vines that may become invasive in a garden. Clumping bamboo grows clumps of vertical shoots that do not vines. Both types of bamboo require the same general care.
Timing
Bamboo goes through natural phases of growth that should not cause concern to the gardener. According to the Bamboo Garden, bamboo leaves always yellow in spring, and sometimes drop off at that time, as the plant prepares for new leaf growth over summer. Yellow leaves at any other time of the year may be due to a lack of care.
Light
According to the Bamboo Garden, bamboo plants do best when they get at least five hours of direct sunlight every day. Some bamboo prefers shading during the hot part of the day. Plants that don't receive enough light lose their color and turn yellow or brown.
Soil and Drainage
Bamboo requires good drainage around its roots, and should be planted in a loose, quick-draining foundation. Good bamboo foundations include quick-draining soil mixed with gravel, or gravel on its won. Thick soil suffocates the plant's roots and results in spindly, discolored bamboo.
Water
Bamboo plants are used to humid, watery environments and suffer when they don't receive enough water. Although they don't like wet, thick soil, bamboo that's grown in porous soil or gravel alone can be watered frequently. A bamboo plant whose leaves are yellow or rolled up is probably not receiving enough water.
