Root stimulators designed for plants, flowers and trees help promote strong root growth. Often debated by the gardening community, root stimulators claim to have essential nutrients that support the growth of existing plant roots, and stimulate the growth of new roots. Root stimulators are often used when plants, flowers or bare-root trees are transplanted. Always follow the instructions and guidelines for proper application.
Things You'll Need
Root stimulator
Watering can
Plants, trees or shrubs
Container
Bucket
Pour the root stimulator into a watering can and mix it with water according to the package ratio instructions.
Plant the young plants in the ground or container according to their included specifications.
Water the young plants, or newly transplanted plants with the root stimulator and water solution until the soil is thoroughly moist. Use the root stimulator very early in the growing season, when the plant's root development is in its most crucial and important stage.
Fill a bucket with water, and add in enough root stimulator formula to make a diluted solution as stated on the package. Soak the bare roots of your trees, plants or shrubs overnight, or as stated on directions.
Tips & Warnings
Shop around and locate a root stimulator suitable for the type of plant you are planting, transplanting or propagating. Root stimulators manufactured for fruit, nut or shade trees may not be suitable for your tomatoes or violets. Look for a brand of root stimulator that contains nitrogen along with other nutrients. Many root stimulator brands only contain vitamin B1, which has not been proven to be effective on roots, according to Arizona Coop Extension.
Use the root stimulator on a few plants for the first growing season. At the end of the growing season, compare the plants watered with root stimulator to the plants watered with plain water. If there is no detectable difference, change brands of root stimulator.
Never pour partially-filled root stimulator containers down any interior or exterior drain. Call the local solid waste agency for proper disposal instructions.
