A grow bag is an alternative to a traditional planting container. Gardeners can use almost any kind of bag as a grow bag, including garbage bags, plastic grocery bags and burlap sacks. Landscape fabric also makes a great material for grow bags because it allows water and air to circulate through the soil. To make a grow bag out of landscape fabric is a simple process.
Things You'll Need
Landscape fabric
Measuring tape
Scissors
Stapler
Staples
Potting soil
Lay the landscape fabric out on a flat surface. Use the measuring tape to measure a 4-foot-by-4-foot square. Cut out the square using scissors.
Fold the square in half. The folded edge will be the bottom of the grow bag, and the opposite opening will be the top.
Staple the first side of the grow bag together. Put a staple every inch along the side of the fabric, 1/2 inch from the edge. Repeat on the other side.
Hold the grow bag upright so the folded edge is in contact with the ground. Open the bag and fill it with regular potting soil. The potting soil will weigh down the bag and stabilize the bottom. You do not need to add holes or rocks to the bottom for drainage because landscape fabric is porous and will drain on its own.
Tips & Warnings
If you don't want to staple the sides of the bag together, you can sew them together with fishing line and a quilting needle.
