Valuables hidden inside a home may still be found by a tenacious thief. The right spot can make the storage container easier for you to retrieve and more difficult for others to find. Items that have been sealed in storage containers and buried underground are much less likely to be located by unauthorized persons. Discretely bury your valuables in a storage container for peace of mind without the expense of safe deposit box fees.
Things You'll Need
Shovel
Post hole digger (optional)
Tarp
Search for a location away from buildings and near a semi-permanent metal feature like a fence or antenna. Wait until a time when there is no one around to see you bury the container.
Scrape the top 2 inches of soil and grass from the spot with the edge of the shovel. Peel back the cut section so it can be set back in place later. Repeat this until you have exposed a section of the ground large enough to hold the storage container.
Dig the hole wide enough to fit the container and deep enough to cover it with 2 feet of dirt. Keep all the removed soil in a pile on a tarp next to the hole. A post hole digger is useful when making deep narrow holes.
Lower the sealed storage container into the hole. Replace as much of the soil as possible into the hole. Pack the dirt down around the container and add more soil until the level is 2 inches below the surrounding ground.
Replace the peeled sections of earth to cover the packed soil. Walk around on the burial area to flatten it to the same level as the surrounding areas.
Draw a basic map showing the location of the buried storage container so you are able to find it later. Remove the tarp with the remaining dirt to another location to avoid leaving evidence of the dig.
Tips & Warnings
Bury a few metal washers in the area surrounding the container to throw off anyone searching with a metal detector.
Plastic storage containers are undetectable with metal detectors unless they are holding metal.
