Adding mulch to your garden bed before winter is a great way to protect your plants and flowers from the harsh conditions. Mulch provides a protective layer and adds much-needed nutrition for plants and flowers. The key to adding mulch to your garden bed is to know exactly how much to use. Determining the amount is a matter of doing a couple of calculations.
Measure the width and length of your garden bed. Multiply the two numbers to determine the square footage. If your garden is a circle, measure the length from the edge to the center, square that amount and multiply by 3.14.
Subtract 10 percent from the figure you determined in Step 1. This accounts for roots and shrubs that will displace mulch. For example, if your measurement was 200 square feet, subtract 20 square feet.
Decide how deep you want your mulch. Experts say 3 inches is ideal.
Divide the figure you determined in Step 2 by: 320 for a 1-inch depth; 160 for a 2-inch depth; 110 for a 3-inch depth and 80 for a 4-inch depth. The result is the number of cubic yards you need in mulch. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet.
