Lawn weeds are a nuisance. These unwanted plants steal nutrients, water, sunlight and oxygen from wanted plants. In addition, their distinct colors, textures and shapes make your lawn look uneven and poorly maintained. The first step in removing weeds from your lawn is identifying which weeds are growing there. Fortunately, Colorado State University has provided a way for Colorado homeowners to do this.
Identify the most likely suspects. The most common lawn weeds in Colorado include crabgrass, foxtail, barnyard grass, and goosegrass. Keep in mind, however, that weeds are very adaptable and thus almost any weed can appear in your lawn. For a complete list of noxious weeds (weeds that are so widespread that they threaten crops, livestock and native species) in Colorado, see the Department of Agriculture website (see Resources).
Go to the Colorado State University Weed Identification Key (See Resources).
Choose the leaf type of the weed you are trying to identify by clicking either "Wide" or "Narrow."
Choose the leaf surface type of the weed you are trying to identify by clicking either "Smooth" or "Hairy."
Choose the leaf edge of the weed you are trying to identify by clicking either "Smooth" or "Spiny."
View the image results to determine which weed is growing in your lawn.
Tips & Warnings
Most local libraries will carry books designed to help you identify weeds. One example is "Weeds of Colorado: A Comprehensive Guide to Identification," written by Robert L. Zimdahl.
