Andreas Stihl & Co. is recognized world-wide as a manufacturer of quality chain saws. The company produces an extensive variety of models, ranging from occasional use saws to more powerful units such as the MS 460, which is often employed by professional loggers. The carburetor of the MS 460 has been engineered and factory pre-set to operate properly in most environments; as such, Stihl offers limited options for making carburetor adjustments.
Things You'll Need
Small slotted screwdriver
Engine Stalls
Start your MS 460 and observe the behavior of the unit after the engine has warmed up. If the saw stalls and will not to idle properly, prepare to adjust the idle speed setting.
Locate the low speed, high speed and idle speed adjusting screws on the right side of the engine.
Open the low speed screw (marked "L") by moving it 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
Start the saw and turn the idle speed adjustment screw (marked "LA") clockwise until the chain barely begins to move. Back the screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
Chain Moves While Idling
Start your MS 460 and observe the behavior of the unit after the engine has warmed up. If the chain continues to move while the saw is idling, shut off the saw and prepare to adjust the idle speed setting.
Open the low speed screw (marked "L") by moving it 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
Start the saw and turn the idle speed adjustment screw counterclockwise until the chain stops moving. Back the screw another 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
Erratic Idling
Start your MS 460 and observe the behavior of the unit after the engine has warmed up. If the saw idles erratically or does not accelerate smoothly, it is a sign that the idle speed fuel mixture is too lean.
Open the low speed screw by moving it counterclockwise until the engine idles evenly and accelerates smoothly.
Turn the idle speed adjustment screw clockwise until the chain barely begins to move. Back the screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
High Elevation Operation
Start the chain saw and permit the engine to warm up.
Press the throttle trigger and accelerate the engine to full power. If the saw runs poorly or exhibits uneven acceleration, it is a sign that the fuel mixture is too rich.
Open the high speed screw (marked "H") by moving it gradually clockwise until the engine idles evenly and accelerates smoothly.
Tips & Warnings
Stihl includes a small slotted screwdriver with every new MS 460.
