Habanero peppers are one of the hottest peppers available to consumers and come in a variety of colors, including red, orange and brown. The unripe version of any of these is green. There may be times when you cannot grow your habanero peppers to full maturity and need to pick them early because of situations like pests or weather. Fully ripened habanero peppers contain higher vitamin content and have a different texture than the unripe version. Knowing how to continue the ripening process indoors can help you salvage and enjoy your remaining crop.
Put the peppers in a glass container such as a cup or bowl at room temperature, in an area where they will not be disturbed. The peppers will ripen slower under cool conditions and could get moldy if kept in an area that is too warm.
Monitor the peppers for a change of color. When they have fully changed to the color of your habanero variety, then they are ripe and ready to use.
Use the peppers in your favorite spicy dish, making sure to wear gloves when preparing it. If you are not using the peppers soon after they have ripened, move them to a cooler environment. You can refrigerate habanero peppers up to a week or freeze them if you need a longer storage period.
