The gophers that are digging up your lawn are called pocket gophers. These gophers are 6 to 10 inches long and remain active all year round, though they are most active in the spring and fall when soil is moist and easy to dig. One gopher can create several mounds per day and a burrow system that extends over 2,000 square feet. If you don't want to go out and purchase a trap or hire a professional, consider a home remedy to get rid of gophers.
Locate an active burrow. To do this, find a dark, moist mound, and probe the area around the mound with a metal pole. When you have located the main burrow, the pole will suddenly drop 2 inches. The main burrow will be approximately 6 to 12 inches below ground.
Position one friend at the main burrow's entrance mound and a second friend at the exit mound. Equip each friend with a cage (or some other item) to trap the gopher or a shovel (or some other item) to kill it.
Dig a hole deep into the burrow and insert a garden hose into the hole.
Turn on the water. After about 15 minutes, the gopher will exit the main burrow into the waiting arms of your friend.
Construct a chicken wire or wire mesh fence around your property. Make sure the fence extends at least 2 feet beneath the soil and at least 1 foot above the soil. This will deter gophers from burrowing in your yard.
