In-ground sprinkler systems are excellent, but very expensive. You can make an above-ground sprinkler system, which is very versatile for watering your lawn or plants, at home much cheaper. With a sprinkler head and some PVC pipe and fittings, you can construct a mobile external sprinkler system. Connect this system to your hose and place it in different areas to achieve total water coverage on your desired area.
Things You'll Need
Two sticks of 3/4 inch PVC pipe
PVC Pipe cutters
Three 3/4-inch "T" Couplings
3/4-inch male adapter
1-inch female adapter reducing to 3/4 inch
Sprinkler head with 3/4-inch adapter
Three 3/4-inch PVC end caps
Water hose
Use the pipe cutters to cut three 3-foot-long pieces and one 2-foot-long piece of pipe. Set aside the excess pipe.
Cut two of the 3-foot-long pieces in half and cut the 2-foot piece in half.
Reconnect the cut pieces with the T couplings, one for the 2-foot piece you cut and two for the two 3-foot pieces. Slide one half-piece onto one end of the T coupling and the other half-piece to the opposite opening of the T coupling.
Connect the ends of the 2-foot piece with T coupling to the T couplings on each 3-foot piece. This will create the legs for the sprinkler head and stand on its own. The T coupling on the shorter piece will face up at a 90-degree angle for the last 3-foot piece. Connect the final 3-foot piece to the center T coupling. It should be pointing straight up, if done correctly.
Connect the three end caps on three ends of the bottom of the stand. Connect the female adapter to the fourth end of the stand with the 3/4-inch side. The 1-inch female side should face out. Connect the 3/4-inch male adapter on the top of the standing 3-foot piece.
Connect your water hose to the female adapter on the leg of the stand. Connect the sprinkler head to the male adapter by placing the sprinkler head on the male adapter and twisting it clockwise. Turn the water on to your hose and adjust direction accordingly.
Tips & Warnings
Use some PVC primer and glue on the connection of the female adapter and 3/4-inch pipe to strengthen the bond. Over time, the connection may become weak from connecting the hose over and over.
