Kids become engaged in science when it is hands-on. One way to help children learn about how things grow is to help them to grow their own plants. Growing a potato in a glass of water will show children how plants put out roots and sprout leaves. Growing a potato in a glass is a similar project to growing an avocado in a glass. The plant will generally begin to sprout roots and grow within a few days.
Things You'll Need
Potato
Toothpicks
Glass
Examine a potato to determine which end has the most eyes, which is where sprouts will form. If you are using a sweet potato, turn the potato so that the pointed end will be placed in the glass.
Insert four toothpicks into four sides of the potato at a point two-thirds of the way from the lower end.
Insert the potato into a glass so that the toothpicks hold the potato in the mouth of the glass.
Fill the glass with water. Place the glass in a sunny windowsill and change the water every two to three days.
Tips & Warnings
The plant will outgrow the glass within two to three months. At that point you can plant the potato in the ground or in a large container with potting soil. Sweet potatoes are members of the morning glory family. You can grow the sweet potato vine as an ornamental. Potatoes planted in the ground can later be dug up to harvest new potato tubers.
