MTD manufactures Yard-Man lawn care and snow removal products. The Yard-Man 550 is a walk-behind lawn edger designed to precisely trim the the lawn where it meets your driveway, sidewalk, curb, or other landscaped areas. If you ever run into a situation where your Yard-Man 550 won't start, troubleshooting the issue is a fairly quick and easy process.
Things You'll Need
Fuel
Spark plug wrench
Check for fuel in the tank. If the fuel tank is empty, add fuel to it.
Drain the fuel from the tank if this is the first time you've started the Yard-Man 500 for the season. Fuel may go bad after sitting for many months, and it may prevent your Yard-Man 500 from starting. After you have drained the tank, add fresh fuel.
Prime the engine before trying to start it. This will move fuel into the combustion chamber to start it. MTD suggests pushing the priming bulb two or three times before trying to start the machine.
Check the air filter to see if it is clogged or excessively dirty, which could restrict air flow to the engine. Proper air flow is necessary for combustion of the fuel. If the air filter is dirty, you'll need to replace it with a new one.
Verify that the spark plug is connected to the spark plug wire. Reconnect if necessary.
Check the spark plug to see if it is excessively dirty and fouled up. To do this, attach a spark plug wrench to the spark plug and turn the wrench in a counterclockwise rotation. Remove the spark plug and inspect. If the tip is black and dirty, it will not be able to provide a proper spark to ignite the fuel. Replace a worn spark plug.
Clear out excess fuel from the combustion chamber in case the engine is flooded. To clear out the fuel, remove the spark plug and pull the starter cord eight times. Reinstall the spark plug and follow normal starting procedures for your Yard-Man 550.
