How Often Should You Change Sugar Water to Feed Hummingbirds?.

Change the Nectar Once Per Week
As a general rule, the hummingbird feeder should be emptied and cleaned once per week. As explained by the National Audubon Society, the remaining nectar should be disposed of and the feeder should be cleaned with a solution of white vinegar and water. If necessary, a few grains of dry rice can also be added to the solution for a more abrasive cleaning. Before refilling the feeder with sugar water, rinse the parts several times with warm water. To prevent the hummingbird nectar from spoiling too quickly, place it in a shaded area.
Change Frequently In Hot or Sunny Weather
The hummingbird’s sugar water should be changed much more frequently during hot weather or when the feeder is placed in direct sunlight. The National Audubon Society recommends changing the nectar every two days to prevent fermentation and bacteria growth. As a general rule, pay attention to the appearance of the nectar. If it becomes cloudy, change it immediately.
Bottom Line
When the hummingbird feeder is kept in a shaded area in moderate temperatures, the sugar water only needs to be changed once per week. However, if the hummingbird nectar is subjected to direct sunlight or hot temperatures, the sugar water should be changed every two days.
