The string of hearts plant is aptly named since the leaves on this trailing vine are heart shaped. It is sometimes called the rosary vine. The plant is a member of the Asclepiadaceae family, which includes succulent shrubs, vines and herbs often from the tropics. String of hearts plants grow well indoors, outdoors or in greenhouses. The vine often reaches several feet in length.
Things You'll Need
Pot or hanging basket
Garden soil, clay or loam
Complete 20-20-20 fertilizer
Plant the string of hearts in a pot or hanging basket with quality loam, clay or garden soil. It tolerates a container that is too small quite well.
Set the plant in an area where it receives full or bright sunlight. It grows best in night temperatures of 62 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and daytime temperatures of 80 to 85 F.
Water the string of hearts when the soil feels dry to the touch during active growth. Less frequent watering is needed at other times. The plant does not tolerate overwatering.
Fertilize the string of hearts with a complete fertilizer with a 20-20-20 ratio. Use the fertilizer for the first time once it has been established for one or two months. Continue using the product according to the label directions.
Propagate the string of hearts by cuttings, the seeds found on the vine or rooted with bottom heat.
Tips & Warnings
The small blooms are marbled, white, rose, gray and green.
It grows fleshy, bead-shaped seeds on the stem.
Handle the vines gently. They tangle quickly.
Avoid fertilizing the plant when the soil is dry unless it a liquid version. Water the string of hearts and then use the dry product. This prevents damage to the leaves or roots.
