How to Cut a Branch Off a Tree. It doesn't seem that cutting a branch off of a tree -- any tree, in fact -- would be difficult. And, as luck would have it, it isn't. But, if you wish to make a proper cut and not one that may wind up damaging the tree, a bit more than just sawing through the branch and letting it fall to the ground will be required.

Things You'll Need
Saw
Choose a site on the branch about 2 feet from the main trunk, and then cut a notch about halfway through the branch on the underside.
Move up about 6 inches and sever the branch, using a saw, cutting from top to bottom.
Cut the remaining bit of branch off at the point where the branch connects to the trunk of the tree.
Tips & Warnings
The three-cut pruning method described in the previous steps will help prevent tears or jagged breaks as the weight of the branch pulls the cut open. This will help the tree heal faster and prevent the onset of infection.
