Wasps serve a purpose besides irritating humans who enter the wasps' habitats. Wasps are predators that hunt plant-destroying insects and nuisance flies. Wasps also regularly pollinate various flowers and plants. Many people are allergic to wasp stings, making it difficult for them to enjoy a picnic or relax outside. A homemade wasp trap often eliminates many wasps, making it possible for you to enjoy a backyard picnic or neighborhood walk.
Things You'll Need
1-liter plastic bottle
Utility knife
Needle
String
Meat
Rinse out a 1-liter soda bottle. Leave off the bottle cap.
Cut off the top part of the bottle. Use a utility knife to cut just below the narrowing part of the bottle's neck.
Place a small piece of meat in the bottom of the bottle. Choose meats such as turkey or fish. Dog food works as well.
Place the top part of the bottle upside down. Position the bottle with the narrow neck facing down, inside the bottom part of the bottle. This forms a funnel that guides the wasp down into the food, but prevents it from leaving.
With a needle, carefully punch two small holes in the top of the trap. Feed a length of string through the plastic top. Tie the string together to form a loop that hangs the trap.
Place the trap in an area removed from normal foot traffic. Hang the trap about 4 feet off the ground.
Monitor the wasp trap. Disassemble and clean the trap when it becomes filled with dead wasps. Another option is to throw the old trap away and make another one.
