Pears are juicy, sweet fruits that are rich in fiber and vitamin C. Unlike most other fruits, pears do not fully ripen while they are on the vine. Instead, they mature enough to be picked and then ripen the rest of the way indoors. Don’t just toss your pears in the refrigerator crisper or set them on the counter. Ripen them quickly and properly to fully enjoy their flavor.
Things You'll Need
Brown paper bag
Ripe banana or apple
Step 1
Put two or three fresh pears into a brown paper bag. Toss in one ripe banana or apple.
Step 2
Fold the bag shut tightly and leave it on the counter. For pears to ripen properly, room temperature should be between 65 and 75 F. The ethylene gas released by the apple or banana will help to speed up the ripening of the pears.
Step 3
Check the pears after a few days. Use your thumb to apply gentle pressure to the stem-end on each pear. If the fruit gives way to pressure, it is ripe. If not, return it to the bag for another day or two.
