Bamboo plants are notorious for quickly growing out of hand. If you do not regularly prune a clump of bamboo, it can overtake your yard, and maybe even your neighbor's. Regular trimming will save you future hassles, and it should be a part of your gardening routine. Properly groomed bamboo should have an upright appearance rather than a bushy look, but the hardiness of bamboo comes to your advantage in pruning. You cannot overprune bamboo to the point of damaging the plant; it will grow back to its previous level in a few weeks.
Things You'll Need
Pruning shears
Cut down to the ground any outer canes which have a drooping appearance.
Remove older canes from the outside of a bamboo cluster. Cut these off flush with the ground to allow new growth inside the clump to get light.
Top the bamboo cluster to the desired height. Trim the stalks just past a node 2 to 3 feet from the top to even the top of the plant cluster.
Repeat your pruning annually or if the bamboo begins to look scraggly.
