You just visited the islands and want to bring home a souvenir lava rock for your garden but are plagued by local accounts of horrible bad luck bestowed on those who take rocks from the islands without permission. If you believe in Hawaiian myths, you should seek permission to bring home a rock from the goddess of fire, Pele, who punishes those of arrogance and disrespect, according to the legend. Whether you believe in the myth or not, it cannot hurt to err on the side of caution.

Circular saw
Pick a rock. Many rocks have unique shapes and even animal silhouettes jutting up from the lava base. A rock like this is a good candidate because you can cut the base with little damage to surrounding rocks.
Harvest the rock using as little force as possible. Use a circular saw to separate the rock from its surroundings.
Leave an offering of fruit and a shot of vodka at the site where you took the rock. Tell Pele you are leaving it for her and thank her for her generosity.
Ask a kahuna, a Hawaiian priest, to bless the rock before taking it away from the state. A local park ranger or hotel concierge can direct you to a local kahuna if you do not know where to start.
Mail the rock to your home. Even though you have the blessing, it cannot hurt to not travel on the same plane as the lava rock.
Tips & Warnings
It is believed that a local park ranger, Russ Apple, invented the story of Pele bestowing bad luck upon those taking rocks from the park. Whether this part of the Hawaiian legend is true or not, Pele is feared by locals and given tremendous respect. Any local would advise you to proceed with caution when taking Pele's property from the islands.
If you find that bad luck follows you with the rock, send the rocks back to Hawaii, returning them to Pele.
