Gardenias are a semitropical flower that grow best in a humid and warm environment. Many gardeners consider gardenias difficult to grow, but they remain popular. Origins
Gardenias are an exotic flower. There are more than 250 known species, mostly native to tropical areas of Africa and Asia. They are also commonly grown in Hawaii.
Growing Needs
Gardenias require full sun and an acidic soil. One of the most common problems gardeners have growing gardenias is over-watering.
Shrubbery
Gardenias are actually shrub trees, and they reach a height of between 3 and 4 feet. The shrubs have glossy green leaves in addition to the large blooms.
Scent
Gardenias are often noted for their strong, pleasant smell. The fragrance is frequently used in perfumes and other products.
Color
Gardenias are most commonly white, but a few varieties produce pale yellow or cream-colored blooms.
