How to Drain Oil on a Kohler Command 26HP

A big part of engine maintenance is changing the oil. Changing your oil at regular 100 hour intervals on the Kohler command 26 hp engine will eliminate sludge build up, bearing wear and other friction related wear to the engine. Changing the engine oil is something that some owners prefer to do themselves. To know how to change the oil, the owner of a Kohler command 26 hp engine must first know how to drain the oil.

Shop rags

Drain pan

1/2-inch drive, 12-point socket set

1/2-inch drive breaker bar

1/2-inch drive torque wrench

Clean the area around the oil fill cap/dipstick using a shop rag. This will prevent dirt or foreign matter from getting into the engine.

Grasp the filler cap/dipstick and turn it counterclockwise until you can raise the dipstick out of the oil fill tube. Remove the dipstick and place it on a clean shop rag to avoid contamination.

Position a drain pan directly underneath the engine oil drain plug.

Select the correct 1/2-inch drive, 12-point socket that will fit the engine oil drain plug located beneath the oil cooler and below and to the right of the oil filter. Insert the socket onto a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar. Position the socket on the drain plug and turn the drain plug counterclockwise to loosen and remove it.

Allow the oil sufficient time to drain from the engine. When no more oil can be seen draining from the engine, replace the drain plug and turn it clockwise until it is finger tight. Reposition the breaker bar and socket on the drain plug and turn it clockwise until the plug is snug.

Remove the 1/2-inch drive socket from the breaker bar and insert the socket onto a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench. Tighten the engine oil drain plug using the torque wrench until the reading on the torque wrench equals 10 foot-pounds. Wipe off all oil from around the drain plug with a shop rag.

Dispose of used oil properly. Federal law and some state laws issue severe penalties for violators.
