Front porches can enhance curb appeal and extend your living space outdoors. Front yard landscaping should frame the front porch as a focal point while bringing balance to the rest of the yard. Add a front walkway to make guests feel welcome. Center the walkway from the front curb to the porch steps, or curve around from the side of the driveway. Choose a paving material that complements your home, and offers a solid, smooth surface. Bricks, pavers, stones and concrete are a few examples of walkway materials from which to choose.
Install a border along the walkway to block weeds from encroaching. Use bricks or pavers for a crisp, defined affect, or timbers for a simple, soft look.
Plant flowering shrubs around the front and sides of the porch. Choose plants that will mature to the height of the porch floor so the visual transition from the lawn to porch is seamless. Avoid plants that will mature taller than the railing as they will block your view from the porch. Note when different varieties bloom. Adding evergreens and plants with different bloom times offers ever-changing scenery.
Plant a tree on the opposite side as the driveway to add balance and contrast to smaller plants. Space it at last 8 feet away so the roots won’t harm the foundation of the house as the tree matures.
Add a border of fragrant flowers and herbs along the front of plant beds. Lavender, night blooming jasmine and sweet pea are a few examples of plants that offer color and subtle aromas to establish a comforting atmosphere.
Hang large plant baskets across the front and side of the porch. Plant impatiens, ferns and other plants that thrive in the shade provided by the porch overhang.
