The McCulluch MAC 2816 is a light-weight, curved-shaft string trimmer. The 2816 is a basic model designed for residential use, but it includes a spark-arresting screen and throttle lock. The 2816's engine is a typical air-cooled, two-cycle engine with a displacement of 28 cc. Its semi-automatic line feed requires the user to bump the cutting head against the ground to extend more trimmer line.

Starting and Stopping
Push the choke lever down to the third position, marked "Choke." The choke lever is on the back side of the engine above the fuel tank. Depress the primer bulb on the left side of the engine 10 times.
Place the MAC 2816 on the ground and depress the throttle trigger to full throttle. Grab the starter rope with your dominant hand while holding the throttle down and pull it out about 4 inches until you feel tension in the cord. Rapidly pull the rope straight up four times with a smooth pulling motion.
Set the choke lever to the middle position, marked "Start." Pull the starter cord four more times while depressing the throttle trigger. If the engine does not start by the fourth pull, reset the choke lever to the "Choke" position and begin the process again.
Once the engine engages, allow it to run for roughly 10 seconds at full throttle and then move the choke lever to the "Run" position and release the throttle. Pull the starter rope out 4 to 6 inches or until you feel tension and then push the "Stop" switch to disengage the motor.
Place the engine on the ground and set the choke to the "Start" position when starting a warm engine. Depress the throttle fully with one hand and pull the starter rope up to six times. Move the choke lever to the "Run" position and pull the starter cord five times if the engine does not start. If the engine fails to start in the "Run" position, allow the engine to rest for five minutes and pull the starter cord five more times with the choke set to "Run."
Safely Operating a MAC 2816
Walk through the work area and remove any rocks, trash or debris that the string trimmer could fling across the lawn. Put on your safety equipment and start the trimmer. Bump the trimmer head on the ground to extend the line while the engine is idling.
Sweep the trimmer back and forth with the engine at full throttle to trim grass. Keep the cutting attachment below knee height while the motor is running. Move carefully when working on slopes to retain your footing. The MAC 2816 does not have an automatic cutoff to stop the blade if you slip.
Stop the engine and check the cutting head after each use for grass and weeds wrapped around the drive shaft. Pry out any plant matter wrapped around the shaft with a screwdriver.
