What Kind of Roaches Fly?. As if roaches that only crawled weren't enough to give most folks the jitters, there are also a few types of roaches that choose air as their method of travel. Flying from trees to buildings to homes using their wings, they are often in search of food around garbage cans and patios.

Asian Cockroach
These roaches live mostly outdoors and often fly towards objects that give off light. The adult Asian Cockroach measures approximately 1/2 inch in length.
Australian Cockroach
These reddish-brown roaches grow up to 1 1/4 inches in size as adults. They like to hang around homes in the Gulf coast, especially Florida.
Cuban Cockroach
The Cuban Cockroach is bright green in color and usually ranges from 3/4 to 1 inch in length. They like to fly towards lights on buildings and will also venture inside.
Male Woods Cockroach
While female Woods Cockroaches do not have fully developed wings, the males do. They are reddish to dark brown depending on the species and up to 1 inch in length.
Smoky Brown Cockroach
Smoky Brown Cockroaches are dark brown in color and up to 1 1/2 inches in length. They can often be found flying from trees to houses in search of food.
