The Craftsman LT1000 lawn tractor makes it easier to mow a large yard than using a traditional manual or motorized push mower. The tractor features a combustion engine that powers the drive train and the mower deck. The engine requires clean gasoline, clean air and a good battery to run properly. The engine is designed to last for many years but occasionally may not start or run properly. If the engine does not perform as expected, it may require some troubleshooting steps to determine the problem.
Things You'll Need
Socket wrench
Adjustable wrench
Pliers
Fresh gas
Spark plug
Battery
Air filter cartridge
Check the gas tank to make sure the level is near the full line indicator. Add gas if necessary.
Check the attachment lever to make sure it is disengaged. Locate the attachment lever to the right of the steering wheel. Move the lever to the disengaged position if necessary.
Drain the gas tank if the gas is old. Place a drain pan near the fuel tank. Disconnect the fuel line with pliers and allow the fuel to flow into the drain pan. Reconnect the fuel line with pliers. Fill the gas tank with fresh gas. Dispose of the old gas according to local rules and regulations.
Replace the spark plug. Pull the spark plug wire off the spark plug using your fingers. Remove the spark plug with a socket wrench. Install the new spark plug and tighten securely with a socket wrench. Push the spark plug wire on the spark plug using your fingers.
Replace the battery. If the engine will not turn over, the battery may need to be replaced. Raise the seat and remove the black battery cable with an adjustable wrench. Remove the red battery cable. Lift the battery and remove it from the battery compartment. Install the new battery. Connect the red battery cable. Connect the black battery cable with an adjustable wrench.
Replace the air filter. Locate the air filter cover near the front of the engine. Pull up on the front of the air filter cover with your hand and rotate it toward the engine. Remove the air filter cartridge using your fingers. Install the new air filter. Close the air filter cover with your hand.
