Identification
Today's hybrid tea roses are descended from China, or tea, roses (rosa odorata), tender shrub roses that bloom repeatedly during the season.
History
Meanings were assigned to plants by herbalists in the ancient world and carried by travelers in anecdotes. Flowers appeared on medieval coats of arms and were adopted as religious symbols, adding to the complexity of their meaning.
Time Frame
The China rose was brought to England from China in the early 19th century and was named for its "tea-like" scent. Yellow teas became common in the last half of the century and most meanings date from that period.
Significance
Modern people find the language of flowers a curiosity but to the Medieval French and English Victorians it could make or break relationships.
Victorians
The Victorians assigned polite meanings of joy, platonic friendship and an appeal to care to yellow roses. In addition, a tea rose meant "I'll always remember you".
Other Meanings
The Germans took yellow roses as a sign of infidelity and dying love. Messages of separation such as "remember," "welcome back" or "new beginnings" are other meanings from the continent and Middle East.
