Asters bloom much later than the majority of perennial species, with most flowering in late summer or early fall until the first frost of the season prevents any further blooming. North American parent species and cultivars are available for U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. Along with the orchid family, the aster family is the largest of all plant groups, so plenty of varieties exist.
USDA Zones 3 and 4
In USDA zones 3 and 4, the tatarian aster (Aster tataricus) blooms during September. It attracts butterflies with its blue and yellow flowers, and since it can grow to 6 feet, it works well in the rear of a perennial garden or border. Another aster for colder zones is the New England aster (Aster novae-angliae). It prefers damp locations and grows to 7 feet tall. Multiple color forms of the New England aster occur, ranging from purple to white. These perennials bloom from August through October.
USDA Zones 5 and 6
Without its flowers during the growing season, Aster ericoides "First Snow" resembles a juniper bush. But when it blooms late in summer or at the beginning of autumn in USDA zones 5 and 6, First Snow generates enough small white flowers to live up to its name. First Snow tolerates drought and grows to 24 inches. The New York aster (Aster novi-belgii) grows to 2 feet, producing its purple flowers in September and October. New York asters have the nickname of Michaelmas daisies, since their bloom period occurs close to Sept. 29 each year, which is St. Michael's Day.
USDA Zones 7 and 8
The perennial salt-marsh aster (Aster tenuifolius) thrives in brackish and salt water, making it an option for seaside plantings in USDA zones 7 and 8. It grows to 2 feet tall, with pale purple flowers that may also be white or pink. Salt-marsh asters bloom from August through October. Aster "Wood's Purple" is a cultivar of wood aster that handles zones 7 and 8, with violet-blue flowers featuring yellow centers. It matures to 18 inches and is a possibility in any sunny site or as a container plant.
USDA Zone 9
Frikart's aster (Aster x frikartii) is a hybrid plant that blooms as early as June in USDA zone 9, flowering through September. It has lavender blue flowers and works well as a foundation species. Lady in Black is a form of the calico aster (Aster lateriflorus). It serves as a patio flower in zone 9, growing to 36 inches and blooming from late summer through the middle of fall. It possesses purple-black leaves that sharply contrast with its white flowers.
