Its catalog lists 70 cultivars of hydrangeas, including tree hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata spp.), oakleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia spp.), mopheads and lacecaps (Hydrangea macrophylla spp.), and mountain hydrangeas (Hydrangea serrata). Some are new hybrids, such as the just-introduced "Golden Crane" (Hydrangea angustipetala "MonLongShou"), a scented white hydrangea with golden centers.
White
A classic white hydrangea, "Annabelle," which is known as a snowball hydrangea or smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens "Annabelle"), produces clusters of round, pure white blooms 1 foot across in late spring and summer. It has bright green leaves and thrives in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 9. Other white-flowering Monrovia hydrangeas include oakleaf hydrangea "Alice" (Hydrangea quercifolia "Alice"), which thrives in USDA zones 5 through 9; "Fuji Waterfall" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Fuji Waterfall"), which thrives in USDA zones 6 through 9; and "White" (Hydrangea macrophylla "White"), which thrives in USDA zones 7 through 11.
Pink
Monrovia’s pink-flowered hydrangeas range from reddish pink to deep pink to pale pink, with some flowers having green "eyes." "Invincibelle Spirit" (Hydrangea arborescens "Invincibelle Spirit"), a new introduction, is the first pink "Annabelle" hydrangea. It blooms from early summer to frost with dark pink buds opening to hot pink flowers that fade to soft pink. It flourishes in USDA zones 3 through 9. Other pink cultivars include "Enchantress" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Monmar"), which blooms on both new and old wood, and thrives in USDA zones 5 through 9; and "Pink Elf" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Pia"), a dwarf French hybrid that thrives in USDA zones 5 through 11.
Blue
Blue hydrangeas stay reliably blue when planted in acidic soil and fed with a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants. Otherwise, many of them will begin to shade into lavender, then pink. "Nikko Blue" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Nikko Blue"), with its sky-blue blooms, thrives in USDA zones 5 through 9. "Blue Wave" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Blue Wave") is a lacecap hydrangea with reliably blue blooms even in more alkaline soils. It grows in USDA zones 6 through 9.
Lavender
Both blue and pink hydrangea flowers often take on shades of purple and lavender as the weather cools in fall. A few that start out with lavender and purple include "Cityline Rio" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Ragra"), which boasts showy blooms with chartreuse centers and lavender and blue edges. It thrives in USDA zones 5 through 8. "Penny Mac" (Hydrangea macrophylla "Penny Mac") often produces varying shades of pink, blue, lavender and purple blooms on one plant at the same time. It is sensitive to the level of acidity or alkalinity in the soil. "Penny Mac" thrives in USDA zones 5 through 9.
