A seed pod is a casing which carries the seeds of a plant. The purpose of a seed pod is to protect the seeds as they mature. There are many plants that bear seed pods. They are part of the reproductive structure of the plants that bear them, and they also add visual variety to the plant. They often cling to the plant long after the foliage and they also provide a simple way to collect seeds after the flowers have fallen.
Wild Blue Lupine
Wild blue lupine is a plant that naturally grows in dry woods and in clearings. It grows to a full height of between 1 and 2 feet, and it produces small blue flowers. It produces hairy seed pods with thick walls. The seed pods are ripe for harvesting by midsummer, when the seed pods burst open and throw the seeds to a full distance of between 1 and 2 yards. Wild blue lupine is a short plant that does well as a ground cover or as a foreground plant.
Opium Poppy
The opium poppy is a flower that originally comes from Greece and Asia, and it is a tall single flower that grows to a height of between 2 and 3 feet. It produces blooms in colors that include pink, white, red and apricot. After the colorful petals fade, it leaves behind a bulbous seed pod that is also called a fruit capsule. The seed pods allow the opium poppy to reseed itself, but this plant should not be grown around children or animals as it is poisonous.
Vanilla
The vanilla plant produces a seed pod that is also known as a vanilla bean. The vanilla plant's seed pod is dark brown, slender, and about 8 inches long. The outer covering is tough but flexible, protecting the small black seeds inside. Each seed pod contains thousands of tiny black seeds which may be added to food to give it a fragrant scent and strong, sweet flavor. Not only are vanilla seeds used in food, they are also used in alcohol, perfume and cigars.
Snapdragon
The snapdragon plant is an annual that ranges from between 1 and 3 feet in height. It produces blooms with a distinctive double-jaw shape in a variety of colors. As the flowers mature and fade, seed pods develop at the base of the flower petals. These seed pods start out tan and then turn light brown as the seeds mature. Leave the snapdragon to seed itself, or harvest the mature seed pod and shake it inside a paper bag to dislodge the seeds. After collecting the seeds, plant them elsewhere in the garden.
