While the most common form of cutting weeds is through a nylon cutting line, not all weed eaters use this cutting style. Other weed eaters come in a range of options for you to choose the best way to cut your weeds. Those weed eaters that don't use line are best suited for the thickest and toughest patches of weeds.
Metal Blades
One method of cutting weeds is a head that contains two metal cutting blades. These blades spin with the head and slice through the weeds in the same manner as the cutting line. While the metal blades are tougher and more resilient, they can dull and chip over time. Metal blades, however, can't be used to cut anything thicker than weeds, like hedges, brush, and other woody plants. These blades are heavier and more costly to replace than average weed eater line.
Interchangeable Heads
Some manufacturers offer a head that's easily removed so you can put on an alternate style of cutting head. These heads will allow you to move between a metal attachment for the thickest and toughest weeds to a nylon line for regular around the house trimming. These options are best for those who need a trimmer to fit both of those requirements; however, you may lose power working with the heavier metal head, which may result in poorer trimming performance.
Brush Trimmers
Most brush trimmers are like smaller mowers, except they use a different cutting head. Some brush trimmers use a nylon line, which is much stronger, thicker, and tougher than average weed eater line. Other brush trimmers use smaller metal blades much like the trimmers with the same features. Brush trimmers, however, can only be used for thick patches of weeds and thinner brush. You can't use them for shrubs and other thicker woody plants, for which you'll need a chainsaw.
Don'ts
Never put any metal cutting wire into a regular weed eater. This poses a serious risk of injury to you and anyone nearby, as the line will not stay on the head and will fly out at very high rates of speed. Not only can you injure yourself, but you may damage your trimmer as well. The same rule applies to anything like knives, plastic wire, or anything else you may think would work better. If you need to cut some thick weeds, it's best to buy a trimmer suited for the job.
