One of the beautiful things about flowers is that they are not very picky about what they grow in. Potted plants can be used both indoors and out. Using unexpected items as pots to plant your flowers is a wonderful way to channel your inner gardening artist. Experiment with paints to liven up traditional terracotta pots or use ribbon to match your household decor.
Find terracotta pots of different sizes to give added height to you flower display. Plant flowers of the same color and kind in one pot and place them in a straight line. Do the same with a second and slightly smaller set of pots using a second color that will contrast the flower color in the first row of flowers. Place them in a line next to the first row of flower pots. Continue to do this until you get to the smallest pots you have to create a multicolored display.
Reduce waste by getting creative with ordinary household items you would otherwise throw out. Recycle plastic bottles to use as a flower pot, cutting off the narrow pouring edge. Use different-colored tape to wrap around the outside of the bottles to add extra color. Tin cans of various sizes will add spark and color to your flower garden. Contrast the silver look by using extra tins to hold candles for your backyard events.
Use a kitchen theme to spark creativity in your flower garden or kitchen. Visit a secondhand store and buy pots and pans to plant your flowers in. Use kitchen utensils to plant around your flower beds to keep with the overall theme. Mix edible flowers and herbs into your flower beds, including lavender, basil, nasturtiums, rosemary, roses, lilacs and violets to add taste and color to your plates as well as your surroundings.
Paint one letter on each flower pot to spell out a word like hope, serenity, peace, or even your name. Glue buttons, marbles or tiny stones to your pots to add texture. Tie ribbons around the center of your pots and place them around the house. Use pumpkins or old books as flower pots by cutting out a shape on top, scooping out the insides, leaving the bottom, and planting flowers in the hole.
