Although majestic evergreens provide a sense of timeless permanency in yards and landscapes, their immense size makes them unpractical for many settings. Most standard conifers range in height from 20 to more than 100 feet tall. Dwarf junipers share the same characteristics of standard ones but mature at much smaller sizes.
Characteristics
Like other varieties of dwarf conifers, genetically programmed dwarf junipers grow slowly and maintain a small size. The upright dwarf junipers Little Spire, Compressa and Pyramidalis all have a columnar shape. These dwarf varieties normally mature between 4 and 6 feet tall, growing at a rate of about one to six inches each year. Most varieties tolerate moderate to hard freezes and thrive in cooler climates. These evergreen plants keep their green foliage all year long.
Requirements
Dwarf junipers require soil compositions with a slightly acidic balance although they tolerate higher pH levels than many other types of miniature evergreens, such as arborvitae and hemlock. PH levels above 7.0 can stunt the growth and cause yellowing of the foliage. These pert shrubs thrive in sunny locations, but they tolerate partial shade, which can be especially beneficial during hot summer afternoons. They grow best in light, even moisture near their roots. Extended droughts and standing water can hinder their growth and lead to browning of the foliage.
Care
Planting dwarf junipers in rich, loamy soil provides good drainage. Vegetative compost helps to lower the soil pH and increase the nutrients and porosity of the soil. Annual applications of conifer fertilizer will help ensure adequate amounts of nitrogen and other nutrients. The best time to apply the plant food is in the early spring when the soil begins to warm. Their slow growth seldom requires pruning, but removing dead growth and broken branches can keep them healthy and attractive. Removing overhanging branches from nearby trees will help provide adequate amounts of sunlight.
Uses
The slow growth and small size of dwarf juniper shrubs make them suitable plantings along sidewalks and foundations. When planted in rows, their upright growth serves to define specific areas of the landscape. Their smaller root systems allow them to grow close to flowerbeds and vegetable gardens.
