Stepping stones make a decorative walkway through your lawn or garden. Making your own concrete stepping stones allows you to customize your own garden path. Whether you want to make one stepping stone or a whole pathway's worth, you can create a set of matched or coordinating stepping stones to uniquely decorate your yard.
Monograms
An easy way to commemorate your family is by creating monogrammed stepping stones. You can either carve each family member's monogram into a concrete stepping stone if you are making your own from quick-setting concrete, or paint a monogram on each stone. The paint will wear off after exposure to the elements, but each family member can repaint their monogrammed stone each spring when you begin work on your garden.
Mosaic
A simple tile mosaic makes for an easy and beautiful stepping stone. Simply press broken pieces of tile or china into a quick-setting concrete stepping stone before it dries. You can purchase old china or tile at a thrift store or use pieces from an heirloom set that have cracked. This is a great way to re-purpose tile or glass that you no longer need.
Inspiration
If your garden is a place you go to relax and unwind, you may choose to place inspirational words or quotes on your stepping stones. Carve the words into each stepping stone. If you are using a long quote, carve a word or two into each stone and place them in order so the quote can be read as you walk along the stone path. Another inspirational idea is to carve the dates of important events, such as your anniversary or the birth of a child or grandchild into each stepping stone.
Alternate Materials
While concrete or cement are the most common materials for making homemade stepping stones, you can create your own stepping stones out of any large, flat object. Search for pieces of flagstone to create a free form flagstone path. You can create squares or other designs by embedding bricks into the ground, or use old railroad ties or other salvaged material for a custom walkway.
