Testing shows that beer and aspirin both help plants thrive. Preparation is easy. Pour beer into a pail and allow it to sit for a few days. During that time the alcohol will evaporate, the beer will go flat, and it's ready for the garden. Aspirin simply needs to be mixed with water at a ratio of one and a-half uncoated aspirins to two gallons of water.
How Beer Works
The most beneficial ingredient in beer is yeast. Yeast-filled soil provides the nutrient-rich conditions that plants need to thrive.
The Results of Aspirin Application
Martha McBurney, master gardener at the University of Rhode Island, tested aspirin water on cucumbers, tomatoes, beans and other plants. In the course of testing, she sprayed aspirin water on just-sown seeds and found that 100 percent of the seeds treated with the mixture germinated.
Other Benefits of Beer
Beer seems to have a secondary use as a slug and earwig lure. Bury a can, about the size of a tuna fish tin, next to plants. Only the lip of the can should be sticking out of the earth. Fill the can with beer and check it once a day. Slugs and earwings are attracted to the drink and will likely be caught in the can. Empty the can, rebury it and start over.
Other Benefits of Aspirin
One of the ways plants treated with aspirin water likely grow so large is that the salicylic acid in the aspirin activates systemic acquired resistance in the plants. In fact, plants under stress naturally produce their own salicylic acid, but not in sufficient quantities to fight bugs and disease. The boost of salicylic acid plants receive from aspirin water is enough to protect them from bugs and disease, giving them a chance to become larger and healthier.
