What Type of Oil for a Poulan Chainsaw?
What Type of Oil for a Poulan Chainsaw?. Poulan chainsaws receive oil for the engine and for the chain's lubrication. The engine oil comes from the fuel. The chain lubrication comes from an oil tank that's connected to an oil pump. These different oils allow the engine and chain to run at the speeds needed to cut through wood.

Engine Oil
Poulan manufactures its own blend of chainsaw oils. This two-stroke oil is intended for use in their air-cooled two-cycle engines. However, not an absolute requirement, these oils were tested by Poulan to meet their engine's specifications. If obtainable, this oil will likely produce the best results. Any two-stroke air-cooled engine oil will suffice however. Never use outboard two-cycle engine oil or automotive oil, as this will damage the piston and the cylinder inside the engine.
Gasoline Type
Use only a high grade gasoline in the fuel mix. This will allow the engine to burn the fuel at an optimum temperature and will give the best results. Poulan recommends using at least an 87 octane regular unleaded gasoline. Poulan engines can run with a gasoline that has a maximum of 10 percent blended alcohols in the fuel; any thing higher than this will cause damage in the carburetor. Never use E85 or diesel fuels in Poulan chainsaws.
Mixing Requirements
For the engine to receive proper oil the gas and engine oil must be mixed properly. Use 3.2 oz. of air-cooled two-cycle engine oil for every gallon of gasoline. Mix these together in a fuel container before putting it into the tank. Shake the fuel container vigorously to thoroughly blend the oil with the gasoline. Dump out any fuel that was mixed 30 days or earlier and never store your Poulan with fuel still inside.
Bar Oil
The chain's lubrication comes from an automatically controlled oil pump, which pumps oil from the tank to the bar during cutting. If too little oil is reaching the bar, the chain and bar will start heating up and may damage the sprocket and clutch. Use a high-quality bar and chain oil intended for use in chainsaw. Poulan again manufactures its own bar oil, though its use isn't mandatory, but will likely improve performance. Never use waste oil from your other engines.
