Instead of throwing away old tools, recycle them into yard art. With a welder, rusted rebar, and a soldering iron, get creative and turn that old shovel and hammer into a bird, a stork, a dinosaur, or a spider with web -- whatever strikes your fancy. Paint yard art in bright colors or let it go au natural and rust with the weather.
Decorate the Fence
Don't throw away all those old tools; create a graveyard on your fence that surrounds the garden. Take shovels, rakes, pruning shears and hoes, and arrange them in a decorative fashion on the fence. Allow them to rust naturally or paint them for added interest. Add an old roll of wire or barbed wire hung over a post to finish the look.
Creatures
Create birds using old shovel bottoms for their bodies, round large washers for their eyes, rebar for their legs, garden claws for their feet and a hammer for the head. Weld the washers to just past the pounding end of the hammer, which will serve as the nose or beak, while the claw side of the hammer serves as the back of the head.
Tipsy Water Buckets and Barrel
Take an old water barrel and fill it full of dirt, then use a piece of rebar sticking up out of the barrel and weld old water buckets and watering cans at an angle along the piece of rebar going up the side. Position them so each bucket appears to be pouring into the one below it. Add flowers that drape and give the appearance of water flowing. Ensure it is secure and place flowers in the barrel.
Broken Wheelbarrow
A broken wheelbarrow adds a nice distinction to a garden or a yard when allowed to rust in place. Secure it so it doesn't tip over. Place a piece of rebar next to the wheelbarrow and attach wire to the wheelbarrow through a drilled hole and secure to the rebar. Fill the wheelbarrow with dirt and your favorite wildflowers.
Old Plows and Antiques
The next time you're roaming the countryside pay attention to old farms and barns. You may find an old plow or two turning to rust in the field. Sometimes you may pay a small price or get the item for free. Take it home and arrange it in your garden or yard to create a rustic look. Plant flowers around the old plow in a furrow as if the plow has furrowed up the flowers.
